Romano Prodi continues to be a firm favourite to win the Italian election when voting is completed later today. The Owl Election Indicator, based on market trends at the Betfair betting exchange, has Prodi with a 78.8% chance of victory to Silvio Berlusconi's 19.2% chance.

Over the course of the election campaign Berlusconi has made no inroads at all in to the opposition's lead. Prodi, himself a former Prime Minister, has in fact improved his winning chance from 68.7% on the election indicator back on 23 March.

The opinion polls are telling a similar story although if the latest are to be believed Prodi should be an even firmer favourite.

The course of betting on Betfair is shown below.
