Andrew DysonBiographical Notes from The Walkley Awards website for 2005 Artwork: Cartoon Winner Andrew Dyson, The Age, "John's Green Day" Tasmania's trees provided an inspiration for Andrew Dyson's two-panel cartoon "John's Green Day". Using ink and computer construction, Dyson alluded to John Howard's historic electoral victory and his "hitherto unsuspected concern for trees which made a deep impression". The cartoonist subtly and effectively suggested Howard's particular intention, then in the second panel shocks the viewer with an arresting unexpected consequence. Andrew Dyson won the Walkley for artwork in 2004 and has worked at The Age since 1989. His interests are France, spaniels and military history. He has no hobbies. Judges' comments This piece is simple, clever and original. The line is strong and simple, the imagery clear, and a clever juxtaposition of treehugging and ringbarking is used to great effect to question political expediency.
