Parliamentary Background

Member for Franklin 2002 - present day.

2004: Appointed Minister for Economic Development and Minister for the Arts .

2002-2004: Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Premier and Minister for Economic Development with responsibility for Antarctic Affairs and Small Business - also appointed Government Whip .

2002: Re-elected to the Tasmanian Parliament as Member for Franklin.

Member for Lyons 1996 -1998

1997 - 1998 Shadow Minister for the Environment and Planning and Youth Affairs.

Served on the Public Accounts Committee, Select Committee into the Tasmanian Industrial Relations Act and the Select Committee into Grocery Prices and Markets.

1996 Elected to Parliament as Member for Lyons as the youngest woman elected to an Australian Parliament at the age of 23 years and appointed to the role of Assisting the Shadow Minister for Youth Affairs .

Australian Labor Party

1990: Joined the Australian Labor Party

1990-2000: Vice-President of the Sorell Branch for ten years.

Since 1991 (except for 2000) A delegate to the State Labor Conference.

Elected as a delegate to the three National Conference's of the ALP - the youngest woman ever elected to a National Conference in 1993.

1996 : President of Young Labor.

1998 : Became the youngest President of the Tasmanian Branch of the ALP.

2000 : Joined the new Richmond Branch - Vice President in 2001.

2002: Joined the Beltana Branch.

Education

Bachelor of Arts and Laws Degree from the University of Tasmania.

Work Experience

Jan 2001 - June 2002 : Office of the Tasmanian Premier as a Speech Writer and Media Assistant and the Office of the Secretary to Cabinet as a Researcher and Electorate Officer.

April - July 2000 : Parliamentary Research Officer for the Member for Dunfermline East, Mrs Helen Eadie, in the Scottish Parliament.

Nov 1999 - Jan 2000 : Temporary Administrative work in London - work placements included: Head Office of Tomy Toys (a truck delivery company) a lawyer's office, a publishing house and an administrative company.

1999 : Part-time Electorate Officer with Senator Sue Mackay

1998-99 : Whip's Clerk in the Australian Senate

FRANKLIN

Franklin covers an area of approximately 7933 sq km from Bridgewater in the north to Port Davey in the south and Seven Mile Beach in the east. The City of Clarence is in the division of Franklin. Other major towns include Blackmans Bay, Bridgewater, Cygnet, Dover, Franklin, Geeveston, Huonville, Kingston, Margate and Snug as well as Bruny Island.

Products and industries of the area cover apples, pears, small fruits, fishing, beef cattle, sheep, forestry, cottage industry and tourism.
