Tasmanian Labor MHA for Braddon. Labor Party website before the March 2006 election contained the following biographical notes:
Steve Kons was born on the 17th of September 1962 in Melbourne. His parents Angela and Arthur Kons immigrated to Australia in the 1950s, leaving behind a war torn Greece and looking for a new future in Australia. Both his parents worked as manual process workers in Melbourne until the late 1970s.
Steve was educated at Middle Park Primary School, St Kilda Park Primary School, Elwood High School and completed his secondary education at Caulfield Grammar School in Melbourne.
In 1980 the family moved to Devonport to buy a business, which operated successfully for a number of years. Steve attended the University of Tasmania in Hobart, completing a Batchelor of Laws degree in 1986.
After graduating Steve moved to Melbourne to further his legal career, and remained there for three years. He returned to Burnie in 1989 to buy the Farmers supermarket, and operated it until he entered Parliament in 1998.
Whilst in Melbourne Steve worked for several legal firms both small and large, which included providing tax advice to a large multinational accounting firm. He renovated properties in his spare time.
Steve with his wife Eva, two children, mother and father have become very involved in the community on the North West Coast and believe that there is no better place to live and raise a family.
He joined the Burnie City Council as an Alderman and after his first term became the Mayor. Steve and his family bought the Club Hotel in Burnie and whilst his parents now run it he still enjoys occasionally pouring a beer and serving a customer in his spare time. The Kons family also owns a farm in Latrobe.
In 1998 Steve was asked by former Premier Jim Bacon to run for Parliament, which he did and was elected with a quota on his first attempt.
Before long he was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, then was given the position of Secretary to Cabinet before being elevated to Minister for Primary Industries and Water.
Steve believes that his current role has been both challenging and rewarding. He believes that he has had the support of the primary industry sector and has been able to assist in its development.
The portfolio has been through some tough times but he can now see that the potential is there for growth and with the ongoing support of the Labor Government the future is bright.
Steve believes that the election of a majority Labor government is crucial to ensure continued progress and growth in Tasmania.
“We saw the damage done to Tasmania in the 1990s, when the Liberal Government ran in minority until the majority Labor Government was elected in 1998. Playing it safe and electing a majority Government is the only way of guaranteeing our future.”
