Kirrin McKechnie

Political reporter ABC TV's Stateline in Queensland.

Kirrin has travelled the length and breadth of Queensland in the search for a good story. She's covered everything from lychee growing in Sarina in the State's north, to organic cattle producing in Wyandra in the west, and even the closure of the local pub in the tiny Central Queensland town of Ogmore. Kirrin completed a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Queensland, before joining the ABC's radio newsroom in Brisbane in 1998. She was soon posted to Bundaberg, where she covered issues for the Wide Bay region. From there she headed further up the coast to Rockhampton, taking up a position as the Central Queensland television reporter. One of her first reports from the region was the Childers backpackers' hostel fire, in which 15 young travellers died. After two years in Rockhampton, Kirrin headed back to her home of Brisbane to work as a general reporter and occasional bulletin producer for the 7pm news. She also became a regular contributor to Stateline. Kirrin covered the 2004 state election, honing her skills in political reporting during four weeks on the road with Queensland's political leaders. She now combines her work as the ABC's State television political reporter with Stateline. Kirrin brings to Stateline experience and enthusiasm for Queensland, its politics and, of course, its people.
