Mark Sullivan

Secretary of the Department of Veterans' Affairs
President of the Repatriation Commission
Chair of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission

Mr Mark Sullivan was appointed Secretary of the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) on 26 October 2004, and President of the Repatriation Commission and Chair of the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Commission (MRCC) on 1 December 2004.

Mr Sullivan heads the Repatriation Commission which is responsible for granting pensions and other benefits and providing medical treatment, counselling and related services to veterans, their widows and widowers and dependants. He is also Chair of the MRCC, which provides rehabilitation, compensation and health benefits to serving and former members of the Australian Defence Force. As Secretary of DVA, Mr Sullivan is responsible for the administration of programs and services for some half a million veterans and eligible family members, and leads approximately 2500 staff providing these programs and services.

Before being appointed Secretary of DVA, Mr Sullivan was Secretary of the Department for Family and Community Services (2002-2004) and CEO of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (1999-2002). Prior to these, Mr Sullivan was a Deputy Secretary at the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. He has extensive senior managerial experience in both the private and public service sectors including WANG Australia, SBS, the Department of Social Security and the Australian Taxation Office.

Mr Sullivan is a Fellow of the Society of Certified Practicing Accountants, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and he holds a Bachelor of Economics from Sydney University. Mr Sullivan is a board member of the Exhibition Park in Canberra Trust (EPIC).

Under Mr Sullivan's leadership, the Department will continue to provide high levels of support for the veteran community and to serving and former members of the ADF. This includes addressing the needs of an ageing and geographically dispersed veteran community.

Mr Sullivan is married to Bronwyn and has two children, Fiona and Ryan. Mr Sullivan's recreational interests include rugby union, golf, music and theatre.
