Carmel has served as an MLC since 1997 performing the roles of Government Whip, Parliamentary Secretary and currently serves as SA's first Italian born Minister.

Carmel is heavily involved with the Premiers food and wine councils, a strong supporter of numerous community organisations and is married with three adult children.

She is the first Italian-born woman to be elected to the Legislative Council as well as South Australia’s first Italian-born Cabinet Minister.
