The Australian Democrats have turned to the flag in a desperate attempt to get themselves noticed in the South Australian election campaign. While the state Liberals tried a little Australia Day nationalism in promising to have the Australian flag flown every school day, Democrat leader Sandra Kanck tried a more local approach. Ms Kanck wants to get rid of the "boring" SA State flag with its motifs of the Union Jack and the state badge of a piping shrike with wings outstretched on a yellow disc. She proposes a new flag competition with $50,000 prize money for the winning entry.

Also searching for an issue to grab attention is the Family First Party which has proposed that motorists caught driving without a licence should have their cars confiscated. A first offence would result in a "hefty fine", a second a one month confiscation, 12 months for a third and a jail term thereafter.
