Welcome to the Divided Country

Thursday, 8th June, 2006

Yesterday's National Accounts figures gave another measure of the divide between the big population states of NSW and Victoria and the resource rich states of Western Australia and Queensland. The ABS trend figures for State Final Demand showed the following percentage change for the period from March 2005 to March 2006:

New South Wales

1.9

Victoria

3.4

Queensland

7.7

South Australia

3.0

Western Australia

11.1

Tasmania

5.2

Northern Territory

5.0

Australian Capital Territory

3.2

Australia (DFD)(a)

4.5

(a) domestic final demand

In the March quarter itself where domestic final demand was up 0.9%, 0.4 points of the figure came from Queensland and 0.3 from WA. Without a resources boom the economic picture would not be looking too bright!

Another measure of the divided country when it comes to economic conditions is in today's ABS labour market figures. They suggest that the gap between the old manufacturing states and the new resource states is widening.
