Polls Say Labor Back in Front but the Campaign Continues

Thurszday, 29th June, 2006

Newspoll out this week has Labor still in front in NSW but the relentless campaign by the Daily Telegraph ridiculing the Government of Morris Iemma continues.

This time it is a wonderfully contrived story about Steve Moneghetti beating a commuter train to town.

“Veteran marathon runner Steve Moneghetti has exposed the farce at the heart of the State Government's face-saving schedule by outrunning a train over four inner-west stations,” the paper reported. “The grand old man of Australian distance running set off from Summer Hill and beat the 8.14am all-stops to Stanmore. He had to negotiate peak hour traffic and cross two arterial roads on his way but made it with enough time to board the train at Stanmore.”

Yesterday the Newspoll in The Australian had Labor leading the Coalition 52 to 48 on a two party preferred basis for the period May to June. This was the exact reverse of what the pollster showed for the March-April period.

What we do know about the Murdoch press is that it only likes backing winners. Hence the continued support for the Liberal-National coalition by the Telegraph is of more importance than one result by the News Ltd pollster.
