Sometimes the truth will out, even in the Melbourne Age. I am indebted to one of my sharp eyed readers who spotted this example of complete honesty on the paper's website back on 15 April. He inquired of the news desk at the time whether it was a joke but received no reply. The way the campaign has been going I would recommend promoting the odd spot editor to political correspondent.

Petrol Price Bonus for Howard?

I drew attention some weeks ago to the evidence suggesting a correlation between rising petrol prices and a fall in support for the Howard Government as measured by the opinion polls. With the price of unleaded now going down rather than up (it is almost down to $1 a litre in Sydney ) it will be interesting to see what happens over the next few weeks.

Any appearance of a drop in support for Labor is sure to kick along the continuing fascination journalists have with their stories about a challenge to Kim Beazley's leadership.

Nimbyism Versus Hypocrisy

Talking up the need for nuclear power stations if Australia is to play a part in combating global warming is an interesting strategy by John Howard. True it is that it exposes the Labor Party to charges of being hypocrites on a grand scale for wanting curbs on carbon dioxide production without being prepared to consider the most practical way of achieving it. But on the other hand Mr Howard exposes himself to attack by voters prepared to consider nuclear power as a good thing provided the actual stations are nowhere near themselves.

Labor has been quick to begin just such a scare campaign following the release of the discussion paper by the government appointed review panel. The lack of information on exactly where 20 nuclear reactors might be situated is perfect material to frighten voters in every sea side electorate in the country.

How this political battle between hypocrisy and nimbyism will end up I am not sure but I am sure that the Greens will do better out of it than Labor.

Labor is firming up its policy of supporting uranium exports so that other countries can have nuclear power while pretending to have an ethical objection to such an evil thing at home. The Greens are at least consistent. They oppose uranium mining and the nuclear industry without qualification.
